| The Area |
| |
| La
Farinière is situated on the edge of the village of
Piencourt in the lovely Pays d'Auge of Normandy renowned
for its cider and cheeses. Piencourt is a pretty village
that lies right on the Eure/Calvados border and is
dominated by an impressive Norman half-timbered manor
house and an ancient church. There is a bar/tabac/cafe
where the proprietor's hostpitality is legendary and
where you may even rub shoulders with the mayor drinking
Calvados at the bar! |

 |
The
very picturesque village of Moyaux (2 miles away) has a
supermarket, pharmacy, butchers, delicatessen and patisserie as
well as a small hotel/restaurant. A little further north the
charming small town of Cormeilles boasts some half timbered
restaurants and a supermarket that opens on Sundays.
 |
|
To
the west lies the regional capital of Lisieux where
pilgrims visit the impressive basilica (modelled on the
Sacré-Coeur in Paris) built in memory of Sainte
Thérèse. At the Saturday street market you will find
many local cheeses and other produce from which to
choose. |
| |
| Around
half an hour away is the pretty Côte Fleurie with its
sandy beaches and the stylish resorts of Deauville and
Trouville. The picturesque old port of Honfleur with its
many harbourside cafes and galleries is also only a 35
minute drive. |

|
Less
than an hour's drive to the east lies the famous and
beautiful city of Rouen (Joan of Arc was burned at the
stake here) and about the same distance to the west is
Caen with its excellent shopping and fascinating World
War 2 exhibition/museum. Paris is only 100 miles away and
is easily reached by car or train. |
The nearest
Channel port is Le Havre which is only around 45 minutes away.
Dieppe is an easy 80 mile journey and now, using the new motorway
section, Boulogne and Calais are a mere three hour drive, so the
speed and convenience of using the Channel Tunnel does not leave
too long a journey in France.
